Wild camping on Aonach Mòr in Lochaber

Let’s be clear; “wild camping” refers to staying in a tent, bivvy, hammock or similar at a location not accessible, or next to the road.

Staying in a camping trailer, motorhome or campervan is not “wild camping” despite what online characters tell you. We make this distinction so that people who genuinely practice wild camping are not lumped into the same category as those who stay in laybys in their campervan.

The Scottish Outdoor Access Code is a great thing and allows us all the freedom to go pretty much where we want (there are obvious exceptions which you should read up on) and these rights were hard won.

Some people like to think that wild camping includes staying in a layby watching TV in their motorhome. Negative! This is bad craic and gives real wild campers a bad name. Of course, there are some places you can stay for free and discretely but be aware that some have abused their rights and left a bad impression on communities.
